What do we mean with “sustainable audiovisual production”? Is it just about the environment or does it have social and economic ramifications, too?
Cinema is more than just entertainment; it’s a space for imaging what can influence our way of looking at things and even what might change our behavior. Filmmaking has a concrete impact on resource consumption, emissions, and logistics. The Innovazione e Formazione per una Transizione Green nel Settore Culturale e Cinematografico (INFO-SCC) project was developed to confront this challenge. At its 2-year milestone, the project has helped filmmakers identify actions to reduce their environmental footprint and respond to social questions central to film industry operators. The project has involved operators from the Turin filmmaking industry – a strategic approach to developing the sector in Piedmont. Besides the CinemAmbiente Festival, other project stakeholders are Film Commission Torino Piemonte, Torino Film Lab, Operatori del Doppiaggio e dello Spettacolo (ODS), Robin Studio, and Alps Studios. The project is a space for giving and receiving feedback; not a final ending but rather a passage toward heightened awareness and shared responsibility. It is an occasion for sharing results, tools, insights, and questions about the industry’s future in production, logistics, relationships, and impact, with a view to make sustainability in filmmaking a useful means to respond to today’s challenges.
The project was financed by the European Union – NextGenerationEU in the framework of PNRR, Mission 1, through the Italian Ministry of Culture.
