THURSDAY 8TH JUNE, CIRCOLO DEI LETTORI, H. 10:00 am – 1:30 pm<\/p>\n

I<\/span>n <\/span>the <\/span>last <\/span>few <\/span>decades <\/span>there have been radical<\/span> changes <\/span>in the relationship between the world of scientific r<\/span>esearch <\/span>and <\/span>the communication o<\/span>f the results of this research to <\/span>non-scientists<\/span>. While in the past the <\/span>transfer of scientific knowledge <\/span>has been filtered a<\/span>nd limited to those working in scientific fields, in today\u2019s multimedia society everybody can have fast and unlimited access to many sources of information (which may vary greatly in reliability), and they can start a discussion with anybody. <\/span>In this fluid and <\/span>immediate<\/span> context, <\/span>researchers cannot <\/span>avoid<\/span> the need to communicate the content of their <\/span>studies<\/span> personally and effectively, also<\/span> using <\/span>different communication channels<\/span>,<\/span> and registers<\/span> that are <\/span>often <\/span>very far<\/span> from the rigor of scientific language.<\/span> Despite its complexity, the skill set needed to inform and educate is often taken for granted. <\/span><\/p>\n

FI(<\/span>na<\/span>)LMENTE <\/span>originated from the encounter between <\/span>CinemAmbiente<\/span>, the Doctoral School of PhD research in Neuroscience of the University of Turin and the association <\/span>InTo<\/span> Brain, which awards the Aldo <\/span>Fasolo<\/span> Prize for the best communication of neuroscience to the public through videos. <\/span>In 2022, the <\/span>a<\/span>ward-winning<\/span> videos <\/span>were s<\/span>creened at this festival <\/span>for the first t<\/span>ime. This<\/span> laid the foundation for this ne<\/span>w<\/span> project<\/span>,<\/span> inspired <\/span>by the Science Filmmaking Marathon of the University of Zurich. <\/span>Thanks to the participation and collaboration of the Doctoral School of the University of Turin, the initiative has expanded beyond the field of neuroscience to embrace all areas of scientific research. The project is <\/span>funded through <\/span>contributions<\/span> from<\/span> the<\/span> Compagnia<\/span> di San Paolo<\/span> foundation<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>goal <\/span>of the p<\/span>roject is to <\/span>train PhD Students in video making, giving them a special opportunity to develop the creative and technical skills essential for effectively communicating scientific concepts to the <\/span>general public<\/span>. During a 3-day intensive course, the participants (selected on merit from applications) were taught the basics of visual storytelling: they worked in groups, supervised by professional film directors, and made three short films about their research fields. Our festival provides a unique opportunity to showcase the final products of this course and to lay the foundation for further projects. <\/span><\/p>\n

The premiere of the short films will be followed by a round table discussion on the p<\/span>ros and cons of <\/span>using <\/span>video <\/span>to make information about science accessible to non-scientists, <\/span>but in a way that is still accurate and precise.<\/span><\/p>\n
