This year\u2019s award goes to <strong>Franco Piavoli<\/strong>, independent filmmaker and poet of images. His film <\/span><span class=\"s14\">Voci nel tempo<\/span><span class=\"s12\"> is shown in Panorama.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s13\"><span class=\"s15\">Since birth in 1933 in Pozzolengo, Franco Piavoli has been closely attached to his homeland in the province of Brescia<\/span><span class=\"s15\"> and its traditions. After earning a degree in law from the university of Pavia, he taught law and devoted himself to painting and photography. During the 1960s he began making experimental films; his shorts <\/span><span class=\"s16\">Le stagioni<\/span><span class=\"s17\"> (1961), <\/span><span class=\"s16\">Domenica sera <\/span><span class=\"s17\">(1962), <\/span><span class=\"s16\">Emigranti<\/span><span class=\"s17\"> (1963), and <\/span><span class=\"s16\">Evasi<\/span><span class=\"s17\"> (1964) garnered him awards at the Festival di Montecatini. Through the support of his wife Neria Poli and Silvano Agosti he made his first feature <\/span><span class=\"s16\">Il pianeta azzurro<\/span><span class=\"s17\"> (1982) which competed in the 50<\/span><span class=\"s17\">th Venice Film Festival <\/span><span class=\"s17\">and garnered him the <\/span><span class=\"s17\">BCV <\/span><span class=\"s17\">for new film aut<\/span><span class=\"s17\">h<\/span><span class=\"s17\">ors, the <\/span><span class=\"s17\">UNESCO<\/span><span class=\"s17\"> award, and the <\/span><span class=\"s17\">Nastro d\u2019argento.<\/span> <span class=\"s17\">In the 1984 season of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino he directed Puccini\u2019s <\/span><span class=\"s16\">Suor Angelica<\/span><span class=\"s17\">, in 1985 Verdi\u2019s <\/span><span class=\"s16\">Forza del destino<\/span><span class=\"s17\">, and in 1990 Bellini\u2019s Norma at the Teatro Grande, Brescia. In 1989 he continued his personal film style combining documentary and poetry in <\/span><span class=\"s16\">Nosios, <\/span><span class=\"s16\">il<\/span><span class=\"s16\"> ritorno<\/span><span class=\"s17\">, a reworking of the Ulysees tale, presented at the Locarno Film Festival, the Mill Valley Film Festival, <\/span><span class=\"s17\">San Francisco, and at the Mosco<\/span><span class=\"s17\">w<\/span><span class=\"s17\"> Film Festival. In 1996 he completed this trilogy with the feature <\/span><span class=\"s16\">Voci nel tempo<\/span><span class=\"s17\">, which garnered him the FEDIC award at Venice and the audience prize at the Filmtage G\u00f6ttingen, 1988. His <\/span><span class=\"s16\">Al primo soffio di vento<\/span><span class=\"s17\"> (2002) ran in the competition at Locarno and was shown at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. <\/span><span class=\"s17\">It won the audience award at the 16<\/span><span class=\"s18\">th<\/span><span class=\"s17\"> Neue Heimatfilm, Freistadt, and the best foreign film award at the 2004 Santa Cruz Film Festival. In 2004 he received the Premio Vittorio De Sica at the Quirinale ceremony. <\/span><span class=\"s16\">Affettuosa presenza<\/span><span class=\"s17\"> (2005), a portrait of his friend and poet Umberto Bellitani <\/span><span class=\"s17\">was based on his correspondence with Alessandro Parronchi. <\/span><span class=\"s16\">Il pianeta Azzurro<\/span><span class=\"s17\"> (2008)<\/span> <span class=\"s17\">was shown at Lincoln Center, New York City. <\/span><span class=\"s16\">L\u2019Orto di Flora<\/span><span class=\"s17\"> (2009) was an episode in Ermanno Olmi\u2019s <\/span><span class=\"s16\">Terra Madre.<\/span><span class=\"s17\"> In 2010 he was awarded the Premio Solina medal<\/span><span class=\"s17\"> by the president of the Republic of Italy. In 2016 a retrospective of his complete works was shown at the Festival Cinema du R\u00e9el at the Centre Pompidou, Paris. <\/span><span class=\"s16\">Feste<\/span><span class=\"s17\">, his final medium-length film was shown at Locarno.
