On the occasion of the second award presentation, the commission composed of representatives from <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Biorepack<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and CinemAmbiente <\/span><span class=\"s2\">have <\/span><span class=\"s2\">selected the social ecology theorist <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Vandana Shiva, quantum physicist, philosopher, and economist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\">\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">Political and environmental activist, tireless advocate of the need for new paradigms in agriculture and food supply, Shiva has since her <\/span><span class=\"s2\">studies in India and Canada dealt with questions related to intellectual property rights, biodiversity, bioethics, and the social, economic, and geopolitical implications of biotechnology and genetic engineering. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">Born in <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Uttar Pradesh, northeast India, she grew up in the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Rajahstan<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> forests, on a farm run by her mother, a former schoolteacher, where she was fascinated by nature\u2019s majesty. Coming from<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">a <\/span><span class=\"s2\">progressive family, she was a member of the circle of intellectuals and disciples of Mahatma Gandhi devoted to culture and civil and social rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">On her return to India in the 1980s she took the post of researcher in agricultur<\/span><span class=\"s2\">al<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and environment<\/span><span class=\"s2\">al <\/span><span class=\"s2\">policies a<\/span><span class=\"s2\">t the Indian Institute of Sciences and the Indian Institute of Management. In 1991 she founded the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Nadanya<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> (new seeds in Hindu) movement for the defense of autochthonous seeds against multinationals based on the concept that the plant varieties selected by local famers over the centuries constituted intellectual property. Today, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Navdanya<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> has about <\/span><span class=\"s2\">70,000 members, mostly women, who practice organic farming in 16 Indian states, with a network of 65 seed banks that store about 6000 autochthonous varieties. It also runs the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Bija<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> Vidyapeeth (seed school), which teaches sustainable practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">Shiva travels widely to Africa, Europe, Latin America, and Asia where she participates in international conference<\/span><span class=\"s2\">s and in the battle against genetically modified organisms, unlimited growth, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">and <\/span><span class=\"s2\">inequity<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> of resource allocation due to globalization. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cToday we are witnessing an unprecedented concentration of the international agri<\/span><span class=\"s2\">business in which three aspects converge through the patent system: control of the seeds, the chemical industry, and biotechnological innovation. The right to food, the right to food security <\/span><span class=\"s2\">and availability <\/span><span class=\"s2\">is a right people need to fight for like the right to vote. <\/span><span class=\"s2\">You don\u2019t live or die whether you have the right to vote but you do unless you have the right to food security.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s7\">Her publications have been translated in many languages. Of particular interest is <\/span><span class=\"s8\">Monocultures of the <\/span><span class=\"s8\">Mond<\/span><span class=\"s7\">(1995), on which <\/span><span class=\"s7\">Ermanno<\/span> <span class=\"s7\">Olmi\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"s7\"> documentary <\/span><span class=\"s8\">Terra Madre<\/span><span class=\"s7\"> (2009) was based.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The award Dalla Terra alla Terra offered by Biorepack, a consortium of the CONAI system and European leader in biodegradable plastic packaging, is given to a person or film that best illustrates soil-related problems, protection against pollution and the effects of climate change, and sustainable food production.
