19° FESTIVAL CINEMAMBIENTE

This year, 2016 CinemAmbiente moves back to its usual springtime slot to celebrate World Environment Day on June 5 with a full program of films and events that highlight the vitality of environmental cinema. So, too, the Festival thrives on its ability to attract an array of national and international productions: 81 films will be introduced or discussed by film directors and environmental experts, and will be awarded by five juries and the public. A highpoint on the program is Seasons, Jacques Perrin’s latest film. Perrin will receive the annual Movies Save the Planet Award given in recognition of outstanding effort in promoting or advocating environmental awareness. The Festival will open with Demain directed by Cyril Dion and Mélanie Laurent, who is perhaps better known for her acting under Quentin Tarantino and other directors, but here as militant environmentalist working behind the camera. The film was a box office hit in France, where it won the César award. Another Italian premier showing is Dear President Obama, a film about oil fracking directed and narrated by Mark Ruffalo, actor, director, and climate change advocate who also appeared in the Oscar-winning Spotlight (2015). 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the release of Born Free, winner of two Oscars. Recently restored in high definition, the film will be presented in an advance showing. 2016 also marks the 30th anniversary of the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl which will be commemorated with the showing of The Babushkas of Chernobyl. A special mention merits the film and discussion series about the mountains, which is an integral part of the In cordata project that CinemAmbiente carries forward in collaboration with the Circolo dei lettori and the Compagnia di San Paolo. Other events of interest include the installation Abitanti. La moltitudine migrante [Inhabitants. The Migrant Multitude] created jointly with the Museum of Contemporary Art - Castello di Rivoli, plus meetings and workshops. This year’s Le ghiande di CinemAmbiente literary prize will be awarded Wu Ming 2.
